The Hitchhiker's Guide to Dayton Tech & Startups

The Hitchhiker's Guide to Dayton Tech & Startups

Introduction to Python (beginner level)

  • Sparkbox 123 Webster Street Dayton, OH, 45402 United States

Want to learn one language that you can use to build websites, program robots, visualize data, run servers, and make art? Then you're ready to get started with Python.

Python powers some of the most popular websites and apps we all know and love, like PinterestInstagram and Rdio, to name a few. It's used by tech companies all over the world, including many companies right here in Dayton!

Join us for Introduction to Python for Beginners! This workshop is designed for people who have very limited or no programming experience. During this interactive workshop, we'll explore the basic components of a programming language: data types, functions, conditional statements and loops. We'll mix lecture and practice, and we'll work through lots of problems together.

CLASS DATES: This 2-session Python course runs over TWO Saturdays. Your payment covers attendance for both days.

Class 1:Saturday, April 9th, 9:00am-12:00pm

Class 2:Saturday, May 6, 9:00am-12:00pm

The course will be taught by Kevin Jones-Evans with several teaching assistants present during each class.

Kevin is a software developer with Mile Two where he codes in Python and JavaScript. He earned a B.S. in Computer Science from Wright State and has worked professionally as a software developer for 6 years. In his non-work time, he enjoys cross fit, video games, learning more about everything computer-related, and spending time with his wife and cats.

At this time, you will need to provide your own laptop - PC or Mac - to participate in the course. Note: A netbook or tablet is NOT a substitute.

Please do the following prior to class:

•  Install a text editor, we suggest either Atom or Sublime Text 3 (both are free and available for both Mac, PC or Linux).

• Install Python on your machine:

• Windows: Go to to download the latest Python 2.7.13 installer. Once downloaded, double click on the file and run the installer.

• Mac and Linux: Both of these operating systems have Python already installed.

To avoid spending the better part of the workshop setting up a development environment, please download the above software ahead of time!

If you need assistance getting any of these setup on your laptop please come to one of our upcoming Code & Coffee events. We'll be happy to help!

All attendees are expected to abide by the Girl Develop It Code of Conduct
