The Hitchhiker's Guide to Dayton Tech & Startups

The Hitchhiker's Guide to Dayton Tech & Startups

Intro to JavaScript Class

  • Sparkbox 123 Webster Street Dayton, OH, 45402 United States

JavaScript is the programming language that makes web pages interactive, and is used these days to make servers, robots, and more. That makes it one of the most useful first languages to learn, if you're just getting started with programming and particularly web development.

In this class we will provide you with some of the basics of programming, using JavaScript to manipulate websites and the concepts needed to start on the path of becoming a great web developer.

This course is targeted at beginners to programming and will cover variables, functions, logic, loops, arrays, and objects. If you already know another language, you're welcome to come, you'll probably just find that you work at a faster pace.

CLASS DATES
This 2-class series runs over two Saturdays:

• Class 1: Saturday, August 27th, 1:00 - 5:00pm

• Class 2: Saturday, September 3rd, 1:00 - 5:00pm

Cost includes both classes.

Please keep in mind that there will be homework between classes. It's never mandatory to complete but certainly highly encouraged. Make sure you have time available in between classes to spend completing the homework. This is the best way to learn these concepts!

INSTRUCTOR
Rob Tarr is a developer at Sparkbox in Dayton, Ohio. He spends his days writing JavaScript, HTML and building tools that help to make the Internet a better place for everyone. When not at work, Rob can usually be found playing with his kids, hacking on NodeBots, riding a bike, hanging out with his wife or working on his latest project.

REQUIREMENTS
To take this class, it is recommended you be familiar with the following HTML/CSS concepts:

• How classes & IDs work with HTML & CSS

• How to build a basic site using the <div> elements

• CSS targeting with IDs/classes/elements/etc.

• Have taken our Intro to HTML/CSS class or equivalent training

• We strongly recommend that you familiarize yourself with some basic programming concepts before coming to class. Taking the first Javascript lesson on Codecademy is a good start (https://www.codecademy.com/learn/javascript) - you need only take the first one called "Getting Started with Programming" for now (you're welcome to keep going, of course!). While not mandatory (we will cover all of these concepts in class), we find that students who do either of these pre-reqs have a higher rate of success in this course.

REQUIREMENTS:
At this time, you will need to provide your own laptop - PC or Mac - to participate in the course.

Please install the following prior to class:

• Download Sublime Text 3 - the preferred text editor

• Also, as an alternative to Internet Explorer, please install eitherChromeSafari, or Firefox + Firebug.

If you need assistance getting any of these setup on your laptop please come to one of our upcoming Code & Coffee events. We'll be happy to help!

If you need to cancel, we prefer not to issue refunds and would invest your registration fee back into our scholarship fund. We know sometimes there are extenuating circumstances so please email us if you find yourself in one, but please note that we will not issue refunds for cancellations that occur within 3 days of the class start date nor can we transfer your registration to another class.
